Can you tell us a bit about the key themes in your talk?
Moving senior care into a family based structure creates an opportunity for more intimate, honoring, concierge type care, where everyone is served better. Family based care in a real home creates a culture of people becoming invested in caring for each other, and doing it in a way that everyone can win.
What motivated you to take courageous action in your field?
I received feedback from people in the senior care community that creating a comfortable, luxurious environment for seniors was "too nice" for "these people" who probably wouldn't live long enough to appreciate or enjoy it. This mentality made me rethink the culture that we have created around the end of life and last days. Standing in the judgement of the giants of the senior care industry has required a level of boldness I didn't know I was capable of until Covid showed me how many people were at the mercy of someone else dictating their last days, and the complete lack of humanity that has become standard in our caregiving practices.
What excites you and challenges you about taking the TEDxLogan Circle stage?
I'm excited about how deeply I connect with like minded people. The external challenge I find is connecting with a broader spectrum of people. The internal challenge is always feeling like I am behind, and needing to catch up.
What is your "Why" in life?
My purpose on this planet is to ignite a passion for education and restoring families.
What helps you stay grounded?
Being outside, I especially love barefoot gardening in my backyard. I also employ Emotional Freedom Technique (or intentional tapping) when I feel my calm slipping.
Why is courage important for you as a person?
I realized one day that I had lived the majority of my life in self-defense or pain avoidance mode, and my existence was shrinking. I discovered pain will happen whether I live boldly or hide, courage helped me step into a bold life of service and fulfillment and come out of hiding to create a life I love to live and share
What experiences helped you hone your voice of courage?
I was honored to share a room with people I held in high esteem, and participate in an exercise where I received validation as they voted on the value of everyone in the room. I ranked much higher than I expected, helping me to begin to see my own worthiness to be part of conversations that matter, and to see that I am not alone. I began to see that people were willing to follow me, and I had a responsibility to lead in a direction that would create a better world.
Why are you excited to be a speaker at 2025 TEDx Logan Circle?
I am honored to share the stage with the caliber of speakers that are coming to Logan Circle. The ideas that are being shared resonate deeply with my desire to team up with fellow innovators and create a better place for ourselves and our children. I am inspired by the passion and progress that is being brought to the stage!
