Transportation: The First and Last Mile of Health Care

The importance of transportation in healthcare is wildly overlooked. Insurance companies and hospitals don’t see transportation as one of their in-built costs. A large percentage of patients live below the poverty line, and can’t afford transportation at all. They’re not able to get basic preventative care, and end up much sicker than they would otherwise, costing the system more when they have to call emergency services, and get in-depth care for their worsened conditions. There’s a 50% missed appointment rate in the United States.

Transportation is the first and last mile of healthcare. We must change the way we think about transportation, and consider it a primary aspect of healthcare. By creating a centralized non-emergency medical transportation system, we can combine the best of commercial rideshare and private emergency transportation for a new systemic solution. This door-to-door medical transportation model expands the range of transportation while reducing healthcare costs across the board.

This is good for patients, the healthcare system, and insurance companies alike. It leads to less strain on the healthcare systems when patients have access to preventative care; safety and accessibility for patients, and lives saved as a result of better long term health outcomes.

ABOUT

I am a Nigerian-born entrepreneur whose journey spans healthcare, energy, and entertainment. After losing my mother in 2017, I founded Kerico Healthcare, a non-emergency medical transportation company that operates across Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Florida, and Tennessee, delivering thousands of safe and reliable rides to patients each year. Beyond healthcare, I have built businesses in oil and gas and renewable energy, and through 125 Entertainment, I produce music festivals that celebrate culture and community.
I am equally committed to impact. My ventures support Haitian refugee communities in the Dominican Republic with food, shelter, and education, while in the United States I lead outreach programs that provide free rides for seniors and underserved patients. As a proud father of two, I continue to merge growth with purpose, believing that entrepreneurship can serve people as much as profits.
