What does the Washington D.C. community mean to you?
The D.C. community is filled with vibrant culture and diversity. As someone who is not originally from the area, I have felt welcomed and connected to the pride so many residents feel towards D.C. Being here has inspired me to redefine what community means to me and how I can contribute to history and innovation happening here.
What fun facts may your fans and customers be surprised to learn about?
With over 40 locations, we take pride in finding unique locations to build our spaces in. One of our Amsterdam locations is an UNESCO World Heritage canal house. We are located in the tallest commercial building in D.C.!
Why do you think highlighting community innovators is important?
Without community support for the innovators around us, we miss opportunities to foster growth, accelerate innovation, and drive meaningful change. As a coworking space we have a unique opportunity to create an environment that supports community innovators through collaboration, flexibility, and productivity.
What is your favorite local business in D.C. or Logan Circle?
Red Light Bar & Detroit Pizza is an absolute favorite! Being from Michigan, this feels like a home away from home. All their pizzas are great, but the Motown Square Pizza is a must.
What is something many people may not think about when they think of D.C. that they should?
Beyond the political realm, D.C. has a vibrant culture in music and art. From Go-go music to the impressive murals created by local artists, there is creative inspiration all around the area which draws from the richness in its history and community.
What does being an effective leader mean to you?
Being an effective leader is being able to develop a team through motivation and collaboration and ensuring that people under your leadership are supported and empowered at each step. I’ve seen the people I’ve led find creative ways to solve issues, push their limits, and understand what motivates them.
Tell me about one of your favorite memories in Washington, D.C.
As a Howard University alum and long time resident, it’s hard to pick one! My most recent favorite memory has to be watching my college friend run her first half marathon at the St. Jude Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series. The amount of support for such a great cause was an inspiring moment.
What are the key trends shaping the future of your industry? What are you excited about, and what are you worried about?
Hybrid work has become the biggest shift in the coworking sphere. Covid-19 provided more workers with flexibility and shifted companies away from traditional offices to those that provide greater flexibility, amenities for employees, and that are more cost effective. I am excited to see how coworking continues to foster community and form spaces where collaboration goes beyond emails and conference rooms. Market saturation can lead to lower profitability, which is a big concern. Yet, I think market saturation can signal an increase in demand for the product and can lead to options for all companies and innovators based on their specific needs and goals.
What podcasts/books/movies do you like to watch for new inspiration?
I often revisit James Baldwin, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and Today, Explained by Vox.
