What does the Washington D.C. community mean to you?

The Washington, D.C. community means collaboration, connection, and a tight-knit support system to us. When starting RASA, we thrived thanks to the communal spirit of other founders and restaurant owners. Here, it's not cut-throat; everyone uplifts each other, creating a unique and supportive environment.

What fun facts may your fans and customers be surprised to learn about?

We're second-generation restaurateurs! Our fathers, who are also business partners, have owned and operated Indian restaurants in the D.C. area for the past 30 years.

Why do you think highlighting community innovators is important?

Highlighting community innovators is important because it inspires and motivates others, showing that people in your own community are pursuing their dreams and creating positive change. It promotes knowledge sharing, recognition, and support, reaffirming and encouraging others to follow their passions.

Why was your company created? What is “your why”?

RASA was created based on Sahil and Rahul’s experiences introducing friends, colleagues, and teammates to Indian food. They realized many Americans lacked an understanding of Indian cuisine and culture. Born into the restaurant industry, with fathers who immigrated in 1985 and opened their first restaurant in 1991, Sahil and Rahul grew up seeing friends misperceive Indian food as just "curry" or "spicy." They knew the diversity of flavors and the love in their family’s cooking. By bringing friends to their restaurants, they saw them fall in love with Indian cuisine. RASA is a large-scale way to continue sharing and making Indian food accessible and fun.

What are the key trends shaping the future of your industry? What are you excited about, and what are you worried about?

Key trends shaping our industry include the integration of technology, a focus on sustainability and eco-friendliness, and the increasing demand for convenience and flexible dining options like grab-and-go and meal kits. We are excited about how technology can help make better data-driven decisions. However, we are concerned about the potential loss of connection to our food, with alternative protein options made in labs and food prepared by robots, which could diminish the human touch and understanding of where our food comes from.

What podcasts/books/movies do you like to watch for new inspiration?

For new inspiration, we enjoy the podcast "How I Built This" for its insightful stories. "The Bear" offers a realistic view into the restaurant industry - a favorite book is "Unreasonable Hospitality" by Will Guidara.

What is your favorite local business in D.C. or Logan Circle?

It's hard to choose just one favorite local business in D.C. or Logan Circle because there are so many great options! For Italian, we love Caruso's Grocery; for Middle Eastern cuisine, Albi is fantastic; for sandwiches, Grazie Grazie is a top pick, and for cocktails check out Service Bar.
